Joan “Joey” (Terryberry) Hoffman (C’65) and Theodore “Teke” Hoffman (US’61, C’66), 2021

Teke and Joey are both vital members of Christian Science Society, Frederick, MD. They have been active life-long Christian Scientists and have served their church communities. Joey has served as a Journal-listed Christian Science Practitioner since 2007.

Teke and Joey both continued their work in education following their service in the Peace Corps. Joey served as an English teacher for 30 years at Middletown High School and spent many years on advisory boards for education in Frederick County, including the Frederick County Service Learning Advisory Board. Joey has been recognized for her excellence in education through an award presented to her at Middletown High School. Teke works with “Through the Eyes of Children,” a not-for-profit organization providing educational opportunities to orphans of the genocide in Rwanda. Along with his years of teaching photography at both Middletown High School and the local community college, he was a founding member of The Artist Gallery and NOMA Gallery.

Teke and Joey have remained active and loyal in their participation in Principia events regularly, attending reunions, active members in their local Principia Club, and attending events. Teke served on the 50th Reunion planning committee for his Upper School reunion in 2011. Teke and Joey are loyal givers to Principia. They have made major, anonymous gifts to Principia in the past 10 years.

Teke and Joey both served in the Peace Corps in Tunisia for two years. They were teachers in the Urban Teachers Corps in Washington, DC. Joey has served on the Frederick, MD Community Action Committee, is an organizer of Frederick County’s National Homeless Awareness Week (including a community day of prayer), and spent 14 years as an advisor to the Frederick County Service Learning Advisory Board and Frederick Community Action Committee.
