Dr. Anabel Powell Newman

Dr. Anabel (Powell, C'51) Newman was awarded the David K. Andrews Distinguished Alumni Award for 2000 in recognition of her service in the field of literacy. Dr. Newman, professor emeritus of language education at Indiana University, spent her career endeavoring to help troubled readers. She taught undergraduate and graduate classes in reading and adult literacy, and served as director of the university's Reading Practicum Center, training teachers to work with troubled readers from kindergarten to adult years. From 1981 to 1994 she represented the International Reading Association on the National Coalition for Literacy, chairing the group from 1989 to 1991. She served as two-year chair of the Indiana Adult Literacy Coalition, and from 1998 to 1999 she chaired the Review Panel Board of the National Center for Adult Literacy and Learning at Harvard. Newman authored numerous publications, including ABE: Reading, Adult Literacy: Contexts and Challenges, Prison Literacy, and Coalition Building for Adult Literacy. She was consultant for the self-instruction video series I Want to Read, which is used nationally.
