Legacy in Motion: Celebrating the Spirit of Principia Athletics

As the sun dipped behind the bright fall leaves, a sea of familiar faces—students, faculty, coaches, and alumni—gathered in Cox Auditorium to celebrate the Gold & Blue Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony at Principia College. It was more than just a moment to honor athletic achievement—it was a celebration of connection—of enduring friendships, timeless values, and the deep sense of belonging that Principia has cultivated over the years.

2018 Blue Award inductee and keynote speaker Lewis Howes (US'01, C'05) kicked off the ceremony. The renowned bestselling author and host of the globally acclaimed podcast The School of Greatness, was grateful for the confidence and success Principia instilled in him, saying, “Having incredible coaches and mentors like Ann Pierson and Stuart Jenkins (US’78, C’83 ) that stood up for me, that believed in me, that sacrificed their time and energy to be of service, and gave a kid from a small town in Ohio an opportunity to live a dream—I’m forever grateful for that experience.”

College students took the stage with anticipation, introducing each inductee amidst a backdrop of nostalgic slides showcasing each inductee’s life and career at Principia. For many students, it was their first time standing in front of an audience, but their courage and deep respect for the inductees were palpable. Freshman Ellie Church (US’24, C’28) introduced Lee Suarez (FS’90), Principia’s first female athletics director and coach. Ellie shared, “It was such an honor to introduce Lee. She coached my mom’s 1982 Hall of Fame volleyball team. Growing up, I always heard stories about how much Lee impacted my mom’s life, and now, I get to honor Lee for her amazing career. It was a full-circle moment for me and made me realize that, like my mom and Lee, I’m part of something bigger—a Principia family that stretches through generations.”

Nicole Gervais (C’01), assistant coach to the 2004 women’s Soccer Team and 2012 inductee, was thrilled to join her team on stage as team members were inducted. “Being with these women again reminded me of what we accomplished together,” said Nicole. “It wasn’t just about winning on the field; it was about the unity shared—the love and support we gave each other. To see that same unity and connection here tonight was truly special.”

Students, faculty, staff, and alumni cheered, gave standing ovations, and were moved by a sense of community and pride. “It’s beyond heartwarming to see generations of Principians come home to campus to celebrate and reconnect,” said Merrilee McFarland (US’99, C’03), senior director of alumni and field relations, “Whether it’s been two years or thirty, the love and connection here never fades.”

The evening served as a powerful reminder of the vibrant legacy of Principia athletics—a legacy that continues to inspire future generations. Here's to the spirit of excellence that defines us all!
