Sidney Clark Hubbard

"Sid Hubbard was one of the ‘hardest fighting, high minded’ football players to have ever played football at Principia College. He was a leader on and off the field.” —Ed Dyck (C’71)

From the moment Sid stepped onto Principia’s football field in 1962, he established himself as a gracious, quiet leader. He was a starter all four years, never missing a single game or practice, and was team captain his senior year. Sid was also named to the Peoria Journal Star’s Illinois all-collegiate football team. His skill and hard work as a student-athlete weren’t limited to football, however.

Sid lettered three times in track & field, competing in discus, javelin, broad jump, and shot put. He also served as team co-captain his senior year. In addition, he was a member of the 1964 varsity basketball team. After graduation, Sid played semiprofessional football for the Colorado Colts. His success in sports represented a combination of superb athleticism, generosity, and dedication to others.

That commitment to others continued long past graduation. Sid served as a board member and president of the Mid-Peninsula YMCA, playing a pivotal role in several capital projects, including the formation of the El Camino YMCA. In 1998, Sid received the Red Triangle Award, the YMCA’s highest recognition for distinguished service, devotion, and significant participation and accomplishment.

Sid’s passion for doing what’s right and ensuring fairness within his community led him to serve as a council member for Los Altos Hills, California, for eight years, during which time he was elected mayor twice. Sid has also served as president or board member of the Construction Employers Association of Northern California, the Structural Roof Erectors Association, and the Los Altos County Fire Protection District. His commitment to his community earned him the Los Altos/Los Altos Hills Joint Community Service Award.

Now retired, Sid lives with his wife, Doni (Ellison, C’63), in Penn Valley, California. They enjoy spending time with their two daughters, Audrey and Vallee, their families, and especially their grandchildren.
