DR. SHIRLEY PAULSON
Illuminating spiritual and religious thought

Shirley is a Bible scholar, researcher, author, Christian Science practitioner, and principal producer of “Early Christian Texts: The Bible and Beyond,” a website that offers an assortment of teachings, articles, podcasts, and adult learning courses highlighting the work of other scholars of early Christianity.

A graduate of both the Upper School and College, Shirley has been involved with Christian Science for most of her life. She became a practitioner in 1991 and has served as head of ecumenical affairs for The Mother Church, Committee on Publication for Illinois, the Christian Science Board of Lectureship, and the Board of the North American Academy of Ecumenists. She has had 90+articles, testimonies, and  recordings published in the Christian Science periodicals, online, and on Sentinel Radio.

Shirley’s exploration and research into the Bible and early Christian texts began with her Master of Theological Studies work at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. She also earned a PhD in Religion and Theology from the University of Birmingham. Shirley’s academic work focuses on early Christian writings, especially those relating to healing practices and theology. Her 2022 book, Illuminating the Secret Revelation of John: Catching the Light, explains in everyday language why this classic ancient text is important for modern Bible readers and those seeking to understand Jesus’s teachings in a new way.

Shirley continues to remain active with Principia. She has served on the Alumni Association Board, taught Bible and religion courses at Principia Lifelong Learning (PLL) Summer Session programs, and attended several reunions.
