Alum Showcases Paintings at Principia College

Local St. Louis artist and Principia alum Carol Carter (US’73, C’77) returned to her “roots” with an art show in the James K. Schmidt Gallery in Voney Art Center at Principia College. The exhibition, which opened on September 3, runs through October 19. In addition to showcasing her work, Carter hopes to inspire the next generation of Principia artists.

“It’s gratifying to come back, since the foundation of my work—the principles that I learned—was here at Principia,” Carter said. “I’m indebted to these professors who steered me onto a good course.”

The exhibition, entitled Return to Roots, encompasses reflective, figurative nudes, swimmers, horses, and self-portraits completed over the last 10 years. This is Carter’s second show at Principia College (her first was in 1984). According to Carter, her art has become deeper and richer since then.

Carter began her art education at Principia College in the 1970s. After graduating, she pursued a full-time career in fine art. In 1984, she earned a master of fine arts in visual art from Washington University in St. Louis.

Over the course of her career, Carter has exhibited her work in six countries, published worldwide, and won numerous international prizes. Her work is also represented in many public and private collections. Earlier this year, Carter was voted into American Women Artists, a nonprofit organization, as a master signature member by the Master Signature & Heritage Circle members. Carter maintains a storefront studio in Tower Grove East.

During the opening reception at Principia College, Carter spoke briefly with students about her technique and her journey as an artist. She plans to continue the conversation during a lecture on October 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Voney Art Center.

“Principia had such a wonderful impact on my career,” Carol commented. “I couldn’t have imagined 40 years ago that I’d be back to showcase my work. Now that I am, I hope I can impart a little enthusiasm and inspiration to current students.”
