Inaugural Principia Global Days of Service a Success

May 5, 2016
Principians in Kansas City, KS, cleaned up Indian Creek Park.

Turnout for the first-ever Principia Global Days of Service was terrific! Over a four-day weekend (April 21–24), alumni and friends joined forces to serve their local communities. More than 40 different service projects took place around the world. From California to St. Louis to New York to Switzerland, groups sorted and distributed goods at local food banks, spruced up parks, picked up trash along roadways, eliminated invasive species, and much more.

The Upper School kicked off the weekend on Thursday, April 21, donating 600 hours of help to 16 different St. Louis-area organizations, including the following:

  • TASK (Team Activities for Special Kids)
  • Gateway Greening
  • Community Women Against Hardship
  • Little Bit Foundation
  • Helping Hand-Me-Downs

Another School-based project involved our youngest Principians in the Acorn program. At a “Dads’ Play-in” on Saturday, April 23, dads and toddlers made suncatchers together. A few days later, the Acorn children took their suncatchers to Peace Haven Association, a Christian Science nursing facility in St. Louis, where they gave each resident a suncatcher and sang a few songs for them.

At the College, Ferguson House picked up litter on the long road leading up from Elsah to the campus. Four other houses served close to home as well, accomplishing a number of campus spring cleaning projects ranging from window washing to weeding.

All weekend long, and all over the world, groups organized primarily by Principia Clubs made a difference at food banks, schools, churches, homeless shelters, parks, highways, and nursing homes. In all, Principia alumni, students, family, faculty, and friends contributed over 1,600 hours of service in 20 cities around the globe! We look forward to putting even more helping hands to work during next year’s Principia Global Days of Service.
